SLC Rail is a UK rail business, based in Brindleyplace, the heart of Birmingham’s leisure and business district. We help to make rail improvements happen for local communities up and down the country.
We work hard and have fun while doing it. We accept others for who they are, tell it as it is and are relentlessly focused on the detail. To date, we’ve worked with third parties on over 60 station projects and helped to build new stations such as Worcestershire Parkway. If that sounds good to you—then we hope you’ll join us.
Our workplace culture is defined by the ‘SLC Way’
The SLC Way sets out a mission for the business and key principles, how we approach our work and how we treat each other. This is fundamental to our business proposition and is what sets us apart from our competitors. Every new employee hears the story behind the SLC Way and why it is important for the company as part of their induction.

Lucy’s story
Apprentice EngineerLucy joined us as an Apprentice Engineer. She’s two years into a five-year Level 6 Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship BEng (Hons) and can see first-hand the benefits that apprenticeships can bring to businesses and individuals.
“I’ve always been interested in Civil Engineering – it runs in my family! My dad and my sister are both engineers.
“I wish I knew about the apprenticeship route when I was 16 years old and thinking about career choices because I much prefer being able to apply what I learn in the real-world. It wasn’t until I was older that I knew that apprenticeships were a real alternative to university.
“My apprenticeship means I’m learning as I go and putting it into practice straight away. SLC Rail has been really supportive and I’m benefiting from invaluable mentorship from my colleagues. I’m also able to start working towards professional qualifications with the Institution of Civil Engineers – in addition to gaining real work experience on a variety of rail projects – which may actually put me in a better position than those who’ve chosen the university route. I’m so glad I picked an apprenticeship and I would recommend to others to consider this option.”

Mel’s story
Senior Project PlannerMel is a Senior Project Planner and started working for us in 2013 after coming back to work from maternity leave. She has worked on many projects including those for the West Midlands Combined Authority and on Kidderminster, Worcestershire Parkway, NUCKLE and many more.
“It was a perfect fit for my life. It was a small team and you could tell this group of people wanted to make a difference and wanted to work in a different way.
“I love the diversity of the company and how it feels like a family. Even though we are growing big, I think we are still retaining that. Everyone is approachable and obtainable, and I also love that we’re not constrained in how we work and what you can do.
“SLC is open to planning methods and ways of doing things and reporting. That’s why I’ve worked here for so long because I’ve made the role into what I want, and I can bring different ideas to the table.”

Annalise’s story
AdministratorAnnalise joined us as an Apprentice
“I’d never previously considered the rail industry as a career but decided to go for it when I saw this opportunity advertised.
“The year-long apprenticeship involved a mixture of study and office work, helping me to grow in confidence. I’m now involved in other areas of the business such as supporting with cyber security training.
“I’d recommend the apprenticeship route because it gives you learning on the job combined with support from your colleagues.”

Hasan’s story
Assistant Commercial ManagerHasan joined us in 2018 on a placement in the engineering team whilst studying for an aerospace engineering degree. However, when he realised that engineering wasn’t for him after all, we helped him find his dream career path, which is why you’ll now find him enjoying a completely different role as Assistant Commercial Manager in the commercial team.
“I now feel that I’ve found the right career path for me, and this is down to working with a supportive organisation. I’m really enjoying my new role in Commercial, and I’ve already worked on several interesting projects. Ending up in a consultancy like SLC has been great for me.”
There’s a lot to love with an SLC career jump.
