The team at SLC Rail is delighted to be working with the West Midlands Rail Executive in a joint venture with AECOM to develop and deliver new stations across the region. Two new stations, at Darlaston and Willenhall, have been announced and put to public consultation.
Situated on the Walsall to Wolverhampton line, the stations will give the people of Darlaston and Willenhall vastly-improved access to jobs and opportunities in Wolverhampton, Walsall and Birmingham.
Both stations will have two platforms to accommodate six-car trains, with pedestrian footbridge and lifts. They will have long-stay car parks for rail users – 300 spaces at Darlaston and 150 at Willenhall.
The team from SLC Rail/AECOM have been working in a highly collaborative way as rail advisors to the West Midlands Rail Executive, Network Rail and train operator, West Midlands Railway. Through this innovative approach to third-party scheme delivery, we are providing expertise in project management and design management as well as scheme sponsors.
From building the business case, establishing feasibility and option selection, SLC Rail/AECOM will be responsible through to full scheme delivery and handover.
Following a successful public consultation, work has commenced on planning deliverables. It is anticipated planning applications will submitted during the summer and it is hoped work can start on site towards the end of next year.
Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said: “The publication of these plans is the next major step towards bringing passenger rail services back to the Wolverhampton to Walsall line. The opening of these stations is just one part of our plans to regenerate and revitalise this part of the Black Country. They will help unlock swathes of land for industrial, commercial and housing development between Wolverhampton and Walsall.”
