Assistant Quantity Surveyor – Infrastructure Projects

Position Overview

Birmingham (with travel to project sites as required)
Qualification
Degree qualified, or working towards a degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related discipline.

Purpose of the Role

To provide commercial management and quantity surveying support across a portfolio of infrastructure projects, ensuring effective cost control, contract administration, risk management, and commercial governance throughout the project lifecycle.

The role will support the successful delivery of projects while protecting and enhancing commercial performance for both SLC and our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional quantity surveying and commercial support on infrastructure projects from inception through to completion.
  • Prepare, submit, and assess interim applications, valuations, and recommendations for payment.
  • Assess, negotiate, and agree variations, compensation events, and change control mechanisms.
  • Monitor project costs, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow performance.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate commercial records, documentation and contract correspondence.
  • Administer NEC contracts and support the management of contractual obligations, risks and opportunities.
  • Manage commercial aspects of allocated work packages and subcontract accounts.
  • Prepare commercial reports, forecasts and cost updates for clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, contractors, consultants and project stakeholders.
  • Support procurement, tender evaluation, business development and continuous improvement activities across the business.

Essential

  • Degree qualified, or working towards a degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related discipline.
  • Experience within a Quantity Surveying, Commercial or Project Controls role.
  • Understanding of construction contracts and commercial management principles.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills.
  • Proficient in Micrcosoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within project teams.

Desirable Requirements

  • Consultancy or client-side experience.
  • Experience working on rail and wider infrastructure projects.
  • Experience using CEMAR or similar contract management systems.
  • Knowledge of public sector procurement processes.
  • Experience supporting tender evaluations and procurement exercises.
  • Working knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts.
  • Membership of, or working towards membership of, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
