Paul McGuigan, SLC’s Senior Project Manager and Regional Lead for Eastern, has a near three-decade-long career delivering many renewals and enhancement construction projects.
He began his career on the Copenhagen Metro Project, starting out as a Graduate Engineer with Maunsell Ltd. Since then, Paul has worked with many companies, including Birse Rail, Tony Gee and Partners, Network Rail and SLC.
Paul explains: “I’ve been lucky enough to be part of landmark projects like East West Rail Phase 1, HS2, the Birmingham Gateway Project, and countless renewal works on the West Coast Route Modernisation Programme.”
With a strong contracting background, Paul has developed a passion for delivering renewal projects and enjoys working on them because they are essential for the continued prosperity of our railways.
“It was at Birse Rail, working on the Civils Framework Agreement with Network Rail, that I developed my understanding of delivering efficient renewal projects,” said Paul.
“I was responsible for managing a portfolio of renewal projects – everything from bridge deck reconstructions and embankment stabilisations to brickwork repairs. Each required meticulous planning, a steady flow of designs, and ensuring that we secured access to railway possessions well in advance.”
As a Chartered Civil Engineer, Paul finds working on major civil engineering projects deeply fulfilling as you can stand back at the end of a project and see the tangible legacy and impact the railway has on the regeneration of an entire region. However, he understands that renewal projects come with specific challenges and he looks forward to helping more clients with these in the future.
