Siân Pitchford, Head of Engineering at SLC Rail, has been awarded Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the world’s oldest professional engineering association, recognising her exceptional knowledge, ability, and experience in the field.

Siân’s passion for civil engineering began as a teenager when she attended a Women in Engineering event and discovered the breadth of engineering careers available. Intrigued by civil engineering in particular, she studied the subject at Oxford Brookes University. Then, during a year-long placement with Balfour Beatty Major Projects, Siân knew it was the perfect fit for her, a career choice she has pursued for 27 years and counting.

She has worked for SLC for nine years and was promoted last year to Head of Engineering, where she has led the engineering team’s continued growth.  She also works on a variety of projects and aspects including CDM and has been the Principal Designer Representative on a number of SLC’s schemes. Siân was also involved in developing the Requirements Management process for SLC, which is one of the many unique processes that SLC has for ensuring the successful delivery of projects.

Siân said: “The ICE has always been something I have valued in my career, and I’m honoured to be awarded this Fellowship.  I’m committed to supporting our team of engineers with making the most of SLC’s training scheme and the ICE’s training and professional development opportunities.

“As a Fellow, I’m also looking forward to continuing to promote careers in Civil Engineering even more widely and helping to inspire and equip the next generation of civil engineers to tackle the complex challenges facing our world today.”

Sam Uren, Engineering Director of SLC Rail said: “Our Engineering team is going from strength to strength, and that is down to Siân’s leadership and supporting the team in their professional development.”

Ian Walters, Managing Director of SLC Rail said: “We’re delighted that Siân has been accepted as a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. She is an extremely committed and dedicated engineer who has been instrumental in the success of many of our projects.”

Jo Barnett, ICE East and West Midlands Regional Director, said: “Many congratulations to Siân on achieving the highest grade at the Institution of Civil Engineers. For anyone considering following in Siân’s footsteps and applying for Fellowship, please do not hesitate to contact me. My details can be found at www.ice.org.uk.”

The ICE represents over 96,000 civil engineers and technicians across the world who design, build and maintain transport, water, energy, waste and flood infrastructure.
